Most of us will be familiar with the character portrayed through Cable Ties’ ‘Self Made Man’, especially anyone with a pulse on politics. As the riotous trio’s guitarist and singer Jenny McKechnie reveals, “The Self-Made Man created wealth through the exploitation of other people and abuse of public resources. He doesn’t care about the suffering of others because—in his eyes—he got what he deserved through hard work, and they have not. It is inconvenient for the Self-Made Man to analyse systems of oppression which he has manipulated for his own gain. Those things are just a distraction from hard work and getting what you want.” The scathing ode is nothing short of brilliant, with playful and direct phrases that make this punk attack as clever as it is earth-shaking. It also comes with a video directed by Oscar O’Shea featuring the band’s performance as well as the coltish antics of those within their community.
